‘Seek shelter, avoid crowds’: India issues advisory amid violence in Mexico

India has issued a security advisory for its nationals in Mexico amid ongoing clashes and security operations in several states of the country. In a statement posted by the Indian Embassy in Mexico City on Sunday, citizens were advised to seek shelter, avoid large gatherings and minimise movement until further notice.

The advisory specifically mentioned Jalisco State — including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala and Guadalajara — as well as Tamaulipas State, parts of Michoacan, Guerrero and Nuevo Leon. The embassy noted that security operations, road blockages and criminal activity have been reported in these regions, and urged Indian nationals to shelter in place and closely follow local developments.

Alongside the advisory, the embassy issued a checklist of precautions. Indian nationals were asked to avoid areas around law enforcement activity, stay aware of their surroundings, monitor local media for updates and strictly follow instructions from local authorities. In case of emergency, they were directed to dial 911. Citizens were also urged to keep family and friends informed about their location and well-being.

The advisory follows clashes that erupted after a military operation in Mexico in which drug lord Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, was killed. He was the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), considered one of Mexico’s most powerful and aggressive criminal organisations.

Mexico’s defence ministry stated that Oseguera Cervantes was seriously injured during a shootout in Jalisco and later died during an airlift to Mexico City. Following the operation, unrest and violence were reported in multiple areas. The embassy has shared an emergency contact number for Indian nationals requiring assistance.
